EU Can Become Stronger Through Cooperation on Migration, Says IOM Director-General

Amy Pope, Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), stated that the European Union has a unique opportunity to demonstrate its strength through cooperation, especially with the implementation of the new Migration and Asylum Pact. She emphasized that cooperation will allow the EU to be more effective, have greater influence, and offer more to its citizens. Ms. Pope referred to the constructive relationship between IOM and the Cypriot government in managing migration and stressed the importance of having plans to manage irregular migration, as well as facilitating the legal entry of workers with the necessary skills. Her visit to Cyprus is linked to the start of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU and the need for coordination in implementing the Pact. She highlighted the link between development and migration, as well as the need to support the countries of origin of migrants.
