European Parliament 'Freezes' Mercosur Deal, Seeking Legal Review

The European Parliament has decided to 'freeze' the European Union's trade agreement with the Mercosur countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay), referring it to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for a legality review. The decision was made by a narrow margin (334 votes in favor, 324 against) following an initiative by The Left group. This decision allows time for a substantial review of the agreement, which has been criticized for its lack of transparency and for serving corporate interests at the expense of farmers, the environment, and public health. The European Commission maintains that the agreement is legal, while the ECJ is expected to issue an opinion within two years.
