Farmer Told His Eggs are 'Hazardous Waste' Due to Garden Soil Contamination

A farmer in Bavikhove, Belgium, who has been consuming produce from his garden and eggs from his chickens for over 40 years, has been notified that his land and home are located in an area contaminated with PFAS, so-called 'forever chemicals'. The contamination came to light as part of wider checks following the 3M scandal in Antwerp. The source of the contamination dates back to the 1980s, when sediments mixed with heavy metals and industrial waste were found during works on the Lei River. Medical tests revealed high levels of PFAS in the farmer, who now suffers from an autoimmune disease and cholesterol problems. As a result, authorities have informed him that the eggs from his chickens are considered 'hazardous waste' and he can no longer consume them.
