Fines and Complaints Issued in Road Transport Department Checks for Illegal Passenger Transport

The Road Transport Department of Cyprus conducted intensive checks in Nicosia and Larnaca between March 16 and 22, aiming to combat illegal passenger transport. The checks, focused on taxis, urban, rural, and intercity vehicles, as well as private vehicles at Larnaca Airport, resulted in fines of €8,250 and complaints for various offenses. In Nicosia, 120 vehicles were inspected and 14 were reported for violations. At Larnaca Airport, two violations were found from checks on eight private vehicles, and three violation notices were issued. The Road Transport Department emphasizes that illegal passenger transport in private vehicles poses serious risks to passengers due to a lack of insurance coverage and driver licensing. The checks will continue systematically and targetedly, aiming to ensure legality in the sector and protect passengers. The Department calls on the public to use only licensed taxis with meters and the required insurance coverage, avoiding the use of private vehicles for passenger transport for a fee. Citizen cooperation is considered essential for the success of the checks and ensuring passenger safety. Reporting suspicious cases of illegal transport to the competent authorities contributes to the more effective combating of the phenomenon.
