Foreign Ministry Expresses Disappointment over Equal Distancing in UN Reports – “Inaccurate Picture of Realities on the Ground”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed disappointment with the United Nations’ long-standing tendency to maintain equal distance in its reports on the Cyprus issue, which it believes leads to a fragmented and inaccurate picture of the situation. The statement refers to the UN Secretary-General’s reports on his Good Offices and the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the reaffirmation of the Secretary-General’s commitment to resuming negotiations, aiming for a sustainable and comprehensive solution based on the agreed framework and relevant Security Council resolutions. It also shares the Secretary-General’s satisfaction with the substantive discussions recently held on fundamental aspects of the Cyprus issue. It expresses strong concern about the situation in the enclosed area of Varosha, attributing sole responsibility to Turkey and demanding full compliance with relevant Security Council resolutions. Furthermore, it notes violations by the occupation army in the buffer zone, particularly in the Deryneia area. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the importance of ensuring smooth living conditions, respect, and unhindered exercise of property rights in Cyprus, and expects the implementation of agreed arrangements for a new expanded meeting under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General, with the aim of resuming talks from where they left off in Crans-Montana.
