Former Colombian Paramilitary Leader Sentenced for Crimes Against Indigenous People

Salvatore Mancuso, a former leader of paramilitary groups in Colombia, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for crimes against the Wayuu indigenous people. The conviction relates to murders, forced disappearances, and other violence committed between 2002 and 2006, with the possibility of a reduced sentence if Mancuso cooperates with authorities and provides reparations. Mancuso, who was deported from the US in February 2024, is considered one of the most prominent leaders of the AUC, a right-wing paramilitary organization that operated against leftist rebels. The government of Gustavo Petro had appointed him as a mediator in peace talks with the Clan del Golfo, a drug cartel considered a successor to the AUC. He was also fined $14 million. Colombia has experienced a long-running civil war with millions of victims and hundreds of thousands of deaths.
