George Vasiliou: From Refugee to Presidency – A Life Dedicated to Cyprus

George Vasiliou, the third President of the Republic of Cyprus, was born in Famagusta in 1931. His life was marked by the hardships of being a refugee, as his family moved to Greece at a young age and experienced the consequences of World War II. Despite the difficulties, he pursued a brilliant academic career, studying medicine, economics, and marketing at various European universities. After returning to Cyprus, he faced difficulties finding work due to his studies in a “communist country”. However, he managed to create KEMA, an international organization that left an indelible mark on the business world. His personal life was closely linked to his wife, Androula, who supported him in every step he took. His political career began later, when he became disillusioned with the progress of the Cyprus negotiations. He was elected President in 1988, with the support of AKEL, and dedicated his presidency to resolving the Cyprus issue. He traveled the world, meeting leaders and representatives of international organizations, in order to secure international support. George Vasiliou was known for his simplicity and honesty. He avoided the “wooden language” of politics and preferred practical solutions. During his term, significant reforms were implemented in the tax system and the public service, while he founded the University of Cyprus and laid the foundations for the country's European path.
