Heated Exchange Following Controversial Video – Government and Opposition Clash

Political tensions in Cyprus are escalating following the release of a video suggesting corruption within the Presidential Palace. The opposition is strongly criticizing the government, while the latter is attempting to defend itself. A heated exchange occurred on live television between Viktoras Papadopoulos, Director of the Press Office of the President, and Stefanos Stefanou, General Secretary of AKEL. Papadopoulos accused the opposition of finding an agenda now and stated that the government would not take lessons from parties involved in bribery cases. Stefanou responded with harsh words, claiming that Papadopoulos “serves various Presidents depending on what he can be paid.” Stefanou had earlier called for the immediate dismissal of the President's Chief of Staff, Charalambos Charalambous, and the abolition of the Social Support Fund, due to concerns about transparency and legality. The case is ongoing, with the Police conducting investigations, while the Legal Service remains silent. The case has caused strong reactions and is expected to remain at the forefront of the political agenda for some time.
