Holy Synod: Tychikos, Avakoum Monastery, and Changes to Metropolitan Elections Under Scrutiny

Published January 8, 2026, 10:22

The Holy Synod is in emergency session, with key issues being the case of Bishop Tychikos, the Avakoum Monastery, and changes to the process of electing Metropolitans. The Archbishop proposes the imposition of the penalty of suspension on Tychikos, due to the non-submission of a confession of faith that explicitly accepts the Synod of Kolyvari. Tychikos threatens to appeal to the political courts, even the European Court of Human Rights, something that church circles consider a dead end. The case of the monks of Avakoum Monastery and the annulment of the sacraments they perform are also being discussed. Finally, the Archbishop's proposal to change the process of electing Metropolitans, so that it is done exclusively by the Holy Synod, is being examined, as well as a complaint regarding a financial case involving Bishop Karpasios Christophoros.
