How Many Hours of Videogames Per Week Start to Harm Your Health – What are the Effects

A new scientific study from Curtin University in Australia has investigated the relationship between the amount of time young people spend on video games and the impact on their health. The study found that engaging in video games for more than 10 hours per week is associated with negative effects on diet, sleep, and body weight. Researchers studied 317 students, dividing them into groups based on the time they spent gaming: low (0-5 hours), moderate (5-10 hours), and high (more than 10 hours) engagement. Those who played more than 10 hours a week showed poorer diet quality and a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) compared to the other groups. Specifically, the high engagement group had an average BMI of 26.3 kg/m², a value indicating overweight, while the low and moderate engagement groups had BMIs of 22.2 kg/m² and 22.8 kg/m² respectively, values considered normal. In addition, the high engagement group reported lower sleep quality. Researchers emphasize that the study does not prove a causal relationship, but indicates a strong association between excessive gaming and negative health effects. The problem is not gaming itself, but excessive engagement with it.
