“Humiliating” Danish Solution Like British Bases. Historical and Legal Differences

In a discussion about a possible solution to the issue of Greenland, Associate Professor of International Politics George Kentas emphasized that a solution similar to the British Bases would be “humiliating” for Denmark, as it would not be based on mutual will, but on a threat of the use of force. He highlighted the historical and legal differences between Cyprus and Greenland, as well as the lack of consent from the inhabitants of Greenland. Alternatively, the creation of American bases in Greenland, such as the Diego Garcia base, was proposed. Mr. Kentas stated that unilateral violent action would undermine the NATO alliance, while the creation of bases could be a more acceptable solution. He also pointed out that Russia and China’s access to the Greenland region due to the melting of the ice increases the geopolitical importance of the area.
