Interior Ministry: “€4.16m Measures for Fire Prevention and Response”

The Council of Ministers has approved the allocation of an additional €4.16 million to strengthen fire prevention and response measures in rural and forest areas. The measures include clearing abandoned agricultural land, subsidizing the purchase of fire engines and equipment by Community Councils, and leasing earth movers and tankers. The government's goal is to improve preparedness for dealing with fires during the summer period. The funds will be distributed through Community Services Clusters or directly to Community Councils to speed up the bidding and execution process. The amount was determined after a cost estimate by the Provincial Administrations in consultation with the Community Clusters. The Fire Service is visiting communities to determine the radius around villages where firebreaks should be created. In addition, part of the amount will be allocated to subsidize Community Councils for the purchase of fire engines, with priority given to communities bordering forests or with a low number of fire engines in relation to the number of communities in the cluster.
