Interior Ministry Responds to Audit Report on Shelters: Acknowledges Gaps and Weaknesses

The Ministry of Interior responds to the findings of the Audit Office Report regarding shelters, confirming the existence of gaps and weaknesses in the program. However, it emphasizes that actions to improve the situation have already begun over the past three years. The government has changed its approach, focusing on creating shelters in public spaces with large capacity, such as underground parking lots, supermarkets, and churches, instead of underground spaces in private homes. At the same time, the lack of public awareness regarding shelters is acknowledged, as well as the need to improve the SafeCY application, which has already been corrected in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Innovation and the 'KOIOS' Center. The Audit Office Report confirms the need for reorganization and modernization of the shelter program, an effort that began in 2023. The Ministry of Interior states that the new approach is expected to increase the population coverage rate, despite the reduction in the absolute number of shelters. The goal is to strengthen the level of response to emergencies through the implementation of actions and the gradual improvement of the civil protection framework.
