IOM: EU Has Unique Opportunity to Strengthen Migration Cooperation

Amy Pope, Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), stated that the EU has a unique opportunity to strengthen cooperation in migration management, especially with the implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact. She emphasized that cooperation will lead to better results than isolation and will enhance the EU's influence. Her visit to Cyprus coincided with the start of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU and focused on alignment with member states and addressing irregular migration. Ms. Pope referred to the constructive relationship between IOM and the Cypriot government and the need for plans and strategies to manage migration, as well as legal pathways for workers. At the meeting of EU Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs, emphasis was placed on linking development initiatives with migration and returns, as lack of opportunity is often the cause of migration.
