Iran: Death Toll in Protests Rises to 3,117

Iranian state television reported today that a total of 3,117 people were killed during the recent anti-government protests in Iran. According to the announcement, 2,427 of the dead are considered "martyrs" as they were members of the security forces who fell victim to the unrest. However, the NGO Iran Human Rights, which monitors the situation, reports that at least 3,428 protesters have been killed, with the actual number estimated to be much higher, possibly over 20,000. The Iranian government's announcement contrasts with estimates from international organizations.
