Iran Protests Escalate as Students Join Demonstrations Against Economic Hardship

Protests in Iran are escalating as demonstrations against economic hardship and rising prices spread from merchants to students. Rallies took place in Tehran and Isfahan, with students organizing spontaneous gatherings at several universities. President Masoud Pezeskian stated he is “listening to the legitimate demands” of the protesters and has requested the Ministry of Interior to initiate dialogue with their representatives. The government is also considering fiscal measures to support businesses. The protests began in Tehran's mobile phone market and, while geographically limited, are exacerbating economic pressure. In 2019, similar protests over gasoline price hikes led to violent crackdowns and deaths. The government warns of potential attempts to exploit the protests by foreign powers. Finally, schools, banks, and public services will remain closed tomorrow, Wednesday, due to extreme weather conditions and energy conservation efforts.
