Iran: Why the Regime Remains Standing Amidst Fiery Protests

Despite widespread national protests in Iran and years of external pressure, there are currently no indications of a fracture within the Islamic Republic's security elite. According to analysts and diplomatic sources, the regime is likely to endure, despite being weakened, unless a significant internal rift occurs or social unrest leads to the removal of top officials. Approximately 2,000 people are estimated to have been killed in the suppression of the protests, while human rights organizations report at least 600 deaths. Iran's strong and multi-layered security architecture, with the Revolutionary Guards and the Basij, makes any external intervention difficult without internal support. However, the regime's resilience does not equate to stability, as the Islamic Republic faces one of its biggest challenges since its founding in 1979.
