Is Music Calming for Our Four-Legged Friends?

Published January 18, 2026, 06:19

Music appears to have a calming effect on pets, especially dogs and cats, according to scientific research and owner experiences. Photographer Serenity Strull found relief for her dog, who suffered from separation anxiety, by listening to gentle classical music and orchestral pieces. The 'Through a Dog’s Ear' series, designed specifically for dogs, has shown positive results in a large percentage of dogs in shelters and homes, reducing anxiety symptoms such as pacing and trembling. Research at Queen’s University Belfast confirmed the calming effect of classical music on dogs, particularly in stressful situations like vet visits. Similar results were observed in other animals, such as elephants and gorillas in zoos, where relaxing music reduced aggressive behaviors and improved their well-being. Cats, although with different acoustic preferences, also seem to benefit from music. Studies have shown that classical music can lower heart and respiratory rates in cats undergoing sterilization, while gentle orchestral music can reduce their anxiety. In conclusion, selecting the right music – classical, reggae, or soft rock with a simple rhythm – can be an effective, non-pharmacological means of reducing anxiety and improving the well-being of pets.
