Lithuania Accuses Russia of Orchestrating Arson Attempt

Lithuanian authorities have accused the Russian military intelligence service GRU of planning an arson attempt in 2024 on a factory supplying radar scanners to the Ukrainian army. Six individuals, nationals of various countries, have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident, facing up to 15 years in prison. According to authorities, the group behind the attacks also targeted infrastructure in Poland, Romania, and the Czech Republic. Russia has yet to respond to the allegations, but has previously denied similar accusations of sabotage and attacks in the region. The suspects are said to have had ties to Russia, having studied, traveled, or maintained acquaintances there. Their payment for the actions ranged from 5,000 to 10,000 euros. Lithuania has issued international arrest warrants for three additional individuals and is attempting to extradite a fourth who was arrested in Colombia. This case follows previous accusations by Lithuania against Russia for an attempted arson attack on an IKEA store and similar charges in Poland for undermining support for Ukraine. Moscow has dismissed the accusations, claiming that the West is fueling anti-Russian sentiment. This case highlights the growing tension and accusations of sabotage and undermining between Russia and Eastern European countries, in the context of the war in Ukraine.
