Mediterranean White Sharks Facing Extinction

An international team of researchers is warning of the immediate risk of extinction for white sharks in the Mediterranean Sea, despite the protection afforded to them by international law. According to the research, dozens of white sharks are caught each year and end up in Mediterranean fish markets, primarily in North African countries. 40 white sharks were recorded as killed in 2025 alone. Sharks are often caught accidentally as bycatch and, despite the obligation to release them, fishermen often sell them for economic gain. Fishing in the Mediterranean is particularly intense, exacerbating the situation. The white shark population in the Mediterranean is already classified as 'Critically Endangered' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
