Mercosur: Cyprus Sees No Benefit Due to Lack of Exports

Published January 21, 2026, 09:33

The Mercosur agreement is causing friction within the European Union, with France rejecting it and Germany supporting it. Cyprus, while officially in favor, questions the benefit it will receive, as it lacks significant exportable products. MP Christos Orphanides points out that the agreement appears to primarily serve the interests of Latin American countries, who will purchase machinery from Germany to increase production. Furthermore, concerns are being raised about the import of genetically modified foods and the unfair competition that will be created for farmers. The Provincial Secretary of EKA Lefkosia – Keryneia, Thomas Thoma, emphasizes that Cyprus has nothing to gain from the agreement, as it does not export products that could benefit from it.
