Migration Summit in Cyprus Focuses on Returns and Security

The first Informal Council of Justice and Home Affairs under the Cypriot Presidency is taking place in Nicosia, with the central theme being migration management. The work focuses on sustainable approaches to returns and reintegration, as well as the new Migration and Asylum Pact. The Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Dr. Nikolas Ioannidis, emphasized that migration policy is at the forefront of public debate and that the credibility of European policy depends on the effective implementation of return decisions. The need for a holistic approach that links short-term management with long-term stability was highlighted. Reintegration was characterized as a central element of return policy, while the importance of cooperation with international organizations such as the International Organization for Migration and Frontex was recognized. Strengthening countries of origin and promoting development and stability are considered essential prerequisites for sustainable solutions. The organization of the meeting in Nicosia is particularly symbolic, given Cyprus's position as the southeastern edge of the European Union and its experience with instability and occupation. Condolences were expressed to Spain for a recent tragic shipwreck.
