New Study Reveals How to Prevent Flu Transmission

A new study from the University of Maryland, published in the journal «PLOS Pathogens», provides significant insights into how the flu is transmitted and potential ways to prevent it. The study is the first clinical trial in a controlled environment to examine the airborne transmission of the flu between naturally infected and uninfected individuals. Researchers found that coughing and ventilation are key factors in the transmission of the virus. Specifically, flu patients did not cough much, resulting in small amounts of virus being expelled into the air, while good ventilation helped dilute the virus. Additionally, middle-aged adults appeared less susceptible to the flu, likely due to prior vaccinations and infections. During the study, participants lived in an isolated hotel setting for two weeks, performing daily activities, without any transmission of the virus being observed.
