New Zealand: Unlikely to Find Survivors After Landslide at Campsite

New Zealand police have announced that they consider it unlikely to find survivors after the landslide that hit a campsite on the North Island. The disaster was caused by heavy rainfall and struck a campsite on Mount Monganui, where many families were located. The fate of six people, including two minors, is unknown. The rescue operation has been halted and efforts are focused on locating the dead. Despite initial hopes, after the discovery of human remains, police estimate the chance of finding anyone alive is extremely small. Police Director Tim Anderson said experts believe the recovery of survivors is unlikely, but cannot be completely ruled out. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed his sorrow for the tragedy and said all New Zealanders mourn with the families of the victims. He visited the city of Tauranga and met with families who were at the affected campsite. Separately, an elderly woman and her grandson lost their lives in a separate landslide that occurred in the Papamoa suburb. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and take measures to prevent new accidents.
