A delegation of US Pentagon officials is preparing to visit Cyprus by the end of the month to inspect the Andreas Papandreou airbase in Paphos and the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari. The goal is to upgrade the bases to NATO standards, with US investments in both financial and technical expertise. At the Paphos base, hangars for C-130 transport aircraft are under construction, and plans include runway expansion and the construction of hangars for fighter jets, with an expected permanent presence of at least 12 US helicopters. The Mari base is receiving funding for a helipad and multi-purpose facility, aiming to operate in conjunction with the Souda base in Crete. Simultaneously, Cyprus, Greece, and Israel are preparing joint air and naval exercises in the Eastern Mediterranean, focusing on the protection of critical infrastructure and special forces exercises. The Cypriot Presidency is promoting the strengthening of an autonomous European Union in the field of defense, considering cooperation with NATO as complementary.
