PGMOL to Review Drug Testing Policy for Referees

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) is reviewing its drug testing policy following revelations about former referee David Coote's six-year cocaine use. Coote was dismissed for inappropriate conduct, and the PGMOL now acknowledges that referees are not subject to drug testing, despite falling under the category of athlete support personnel according to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code. This means referees are not prohibited from using substances, but the PGMOL is considering changing this policy, taking into account reputational, disciplinary, and health concerns. Coote's case came to light after his conviction for possessing child pornography and his admission of using cocaine as a coping mechanism for mental health issues. Furthermore, videos surfaced showing him allegedly using drugs while working as a VAR referee.
