Philippines Ferry Disaster: At Least 15 Dead, Dozens Missing

A ferry boat traveling in the Philippines sank in the early hours of Monday, resulting in the confirmed deaths of at least 15 people and the disappearance of 28 others. The vessel, M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, had departed from the city of Zamboanga bound for the island of Hojo when it sent out a distress signal. Approximately 316 passengers have been rescued, while search operations continue with the involvement of aircraft, ships, and personnel from the coast guard, navy, and air force. Authorities report that the ferry was not overloaded, however, the cause of the sinking remains unknown and is under investigation. Videos released to the public show survivors being pulled from the water and receiving first aid, while desperate calls for help can be heard. The incident highlights the safety issues surrounding sea transport in the Philippines, where ferries are often poorly maintained and subject to insufficient inspections. The country has experienced tragic shipwrecks in the past, such as the 1987 Dona Paz disaster, which claimed over 4,300 lives, and the 2015 Kim Nirvana sinking, where 61 people died due to overloading. A more recent similar incident occurred in 2023, when a fire on another ferry, the Lady Mary Joy 3, resulted in the deaths of over 30 passengers. Authorities are facing difficulties in providing medical care to survivors due to staff shortages.
