Postponement for Criminal Prosecutions in Thanasis Nikolaou Case

The proceedings for the criminal prosecutions in the Thanasis Nikolaou case continued at the Limassol District Court, focusing on the non-delivery of evidence to the defense and the preliminary objections that the defendants will raise. Five individuals, including forensic pathologist Panikos Stavrianos and former high-ranking police officers, appeared before the court. The defense protested the delay in delivering the material, which is necessary for preparing their objections, while also accusing the Nikolaou family's lawyer of discrediting the defendants in the media. The family's lawyer, Savvas Matsas, responded that the evidence is extensive (approximately 5,500 pages) and that he is ready to submit part of it. However, the defense insisted on the full and immediate delivery of the material. Ultimately, the court decided that all the material would be delivered in digital format (USB) to the defense lawyers and in printed format to the defendant Christakis Kapiliotis within ten days. In addition, the court requested that the framework for certain admissible facts be established in order to proceed with the process. The case concerns 39 charges related to offenses committed in 2005, such as conspiracy to obstruct justice, neglect of duty, and perjury. The new date for the continuation of the case is set for February 19, when the defense's written submissions regarding the preliminary objections for a fair trial are expected to be submitted. The court stated that it will prioritize the case due to the seriousness of the charges and its long duration.
