Potato Farmers Demand Meeting with Agriculture Minister Over Subsidies and Water Management

Potato farmers in Cyprus are requesting an urgent meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, to discuss the need for state subsidies due to the damages they suffered from the heatwave, frost, and drought in 2025. They are also requesting the provision of water for irrigation during the night, when frost conditions prevail, in order to protect their crops. Despite previous requests, the potato farmers have been informed that they will not receive water, as there is a general shortage. They emphasize that 2025 was a particularly difficult year due to extreme weather events, resulting in increased production costs. The current price of potatoes is satisfactory for consumers, but not for producers. The potato farmers expect the state to support them, so that they can meet the needs of the domestic market and maintain their exports.
