President Christodoulides: Government Actions Aimed at Resolving the Cyprus Issue

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that all of his government's actions are aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue and upgrading the Republic of Cyprus. He emphasized the steady support of Greece and mentioned that he will make decisions regarding his candidacy for the 2028 presidential elections within 2027. President Christodoulides stated that he does not feel pressure regarding the Cyprus issue and that diplomatic efforts do not negatively affect the resolution attempts. He stressed that political equality, as defined in UN resolutions, is not challenged by the Republic of Cyprus, but was challenged by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, who interpreted it as sovereign equality. Regarding discussions on governance, the President noted that it is important for the Turkish Cypriot side, while issues of guarantees and security are important for the Greek Cypriot side. However, he does not set these issues as a prerequisite for the resumption of negotiations and hopes for a swift restart. Furthermore, President Christodoulides mentioned that Cyprus seeks to be a reliable partner of the US in the region and that there is no evidence of American intervention in the Cyprus issue. Finally, he referred to the promotion of the IMEC economic and geostrategic corridor through Cyprus and the interconnection with Greece, which is considered strategically important.
