Protest in Mazotos Against Desalination Unit Installation

Published January 24, 2026, 14:10

The Mazotos Community Council strongly protested on Saturday against the decision to install a mobile desalination unit in the area. The Community Leader, George Dimitriou Pafitis, stated that an independent study in their possession recommends against the installation due to the sensitive habitats present. Protesters accused the government of a lack of consultation and making 'dictatorial' decisions, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the decision and the preparation of a comprehensive environmental impact assessment. The Mazotos Community Council acknowledges the water problem in Cyprus but believes the specific decision is hasty and arbitrary. They insist on the need for documented studies, transparency, and social consensus before any action that could affect the environment. Mr. Pafitis expressed fears that the government is attempting to bypass environmental studies and building permits. He emphasized the existence of sensitive habitats, such as Posidonia Oceanica meadows, that require protection. A meeting with the Ministers of Interior and Agriculture is scheduled for next Saturday, January 31st, in the Mazotos community, to inform residents. The Community Council has already sent a letter to the Minister of Agriculture, requesting answers to specific questions, but has so far received only a general response from the Ministry's Director-General.
