‘Psaroyiannis’ Yiannis Xylouris Dies at 83

Yiannis Xylouris, also known as ‘Psaroyiannis’, passed away at the age of 83. He was a member of the famous Xylouris family from Anogia, Crete, and one of the most important laout players and singers of traditional Cretan music. He began playing music at a young age, learning the mandolin, laouto, and lyra. Xylouris made his first recording at the age of 14 with his brother, Nikos Xylouris. He collaborated with many significant musicians, such as Kostas Mountakis and Vasilis Skoulas, while his music also influenced contemporary Greek composers. His musical legacy is immense, as he combined tradition with modern creation, composing new Cretan songs with particular imagination and technique. He was an artist who opened new paths in Cretan music and left an indelible mark on the Greek music scene. His death is a great loss for the Cretan and Greek music community.
