Putin Vows Victory in Ukraine in New Year's Message

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated his belief in victory in the war in Ukraine in his traditional New Year's address. The speech was broadcast for the first time from the Kamchatka Peninsula, the first Russian region to welcome the new year. Putin called on Russians to 'support our heroes' fighting in Ukraine, expressing confidence in ultimate victory. This televised address is a key festive event in Russia, a tradition started by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. December 31st also marks the 26th anniversary of Putin's ascent to power, having become President after Boris Yeltsin's resignation on New Year's Eve in 1999.
