Rare Aurora Borealis Displayed in Cyprus

The Aurora Borealis, a phenomenon extremely rare for Cyprus, was captured on the island on the night of January 19th by Christos Mastis using a Nikon Z6II camera. The photograph was taken from the Linou - Lakatamia Tower road with specific camera settings (24mm, f/4, 6 seconds exposure, ISO 6400). This event is linked to a strong solar storm impacting Earth, potentially causing disruptions to power grids and satellite systems. Astrophysicist Stelios Tsanggaridis explained that the geomagnetic storm originates from an extreme solar flare and coronal mass ejection towards Earth. While the intensity is expected to decrease, it could still cause power and communication disruptions unless protective measures are taken. A geomagnetic storm is a "attack" on Earth's magnetic field, caused by solar flares and coronal mass ejections that launch charged particles into space. Usually, the solar wind is directed away from Earth, but in rare cases, particles enter the magnetic field and reach the surface, causing the spectacular Northern and Southern Lights. Mr. Tsanggaridis emphasized that Earth is protected by its magnetic field, which directs charged particles towards the poles. However, during strong solar winds, many particles penetrate and reach the surface, causing geomagnetic storms.
