SAFE Initiative: Cyprus to Receive €1.18 Billion for Defense

The European Commission has approved the national defense plans of eight EU member states, including Cyprus, under the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) initiative. Cyprus will receive a total of €1.18 billion to strengthen its military readiness and acquire modern defense equipment. This approval is part of a broader package, Readiness 2030, aiming to mobilize up to €800 billion for defense across the EU, with €150 billion earmarked for joint procurement. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the significant progress made in defense in 2025, while Commissioner for Defense, Andrus Kupilius, emphasized the need for swift action. The first payments are expected in March 2026, following the Council of the EU's approval of the loan agreements. SAFE aims to enhance interoperability, predictability, and reduce costs for a strong European defense industrial base.
