A 60-year-old school principal in Serres was sentenced to two years in prison for unlawful violence and causing bodily harm to a vulnerable person, after she taped the mouth of a 13-year-old student. According to the complaint, the act was committed “for fun” when the student was disruptive in class. According to the student's mother's testimony, the teacher initially asked a classmate to put tape in the child's mouth. When the classmate refused, she did it herself, and then another student tied the 13-year-old's hands with tape. The student remained bound for an entire class period. The principal claimed the act was harmless and intended to stop the student from talking. However, the court found her guilty, and her sentence is redeemable at ten euros per day. The case has sparked strong reactions and highlighted behavioral and management problems within the school community. A philologist from the school also testified, stating that there had been other reports from colleagues about the principal's behavior and that signatures had been collected to report the situation to the ministry.
