Son of Eleni Papadopoulou Jailed Over Her Murder

Published December 30, 2025, 18:22

The 60-year-old son of Eleni Papadopoulou, who was found dead in her Kolonaki apartment in January 2022, has been remanded in custody after a lengthy deposition in which he denied the charges of her murder. Papadopoulou was the widow of a former PASOK minister. Her death was initially attributed to an accident, as a fire broke out in her apartment and she was found dead. Her son claimed the fire was caused by a cigarette, given that his mother was a devoted smoker. However, authorities, both police and the judiciary, are treating the case as a criminal act and have charged the son with the murder of his mother. Investigations appear to have led to evidence challenging the initial accident version. During his eight-hour deposition, the 60-year-old denied the charges and raised issues of procedural invalidity. Nevertheless, the investigating magistrate and prosecutor decided to proceed with his pre-trial detention, as there was sufficient evidence linking him to the case. The case is now in the hands of the justice system and is expected to develop further.
