Stricter Safety Rules for Toys to Come into Effect in the EU

Stricter rules for toy safety in the European Union will come into effect on January 1, 2026, following approval of the new Regulation by the European Parliament and the Council. The regulation aims to enhance the protection of children from harmful chemicals in toys and improve the enforcement of toy safety rules within the EU. According to the Regulation, substances will be prohibited from toys as soon as they are identified as dangerous, including chemicals that disrupt hormones, damage lungs, or cause skin allergies. The ban also covers PFAS, bisphenols, and substances that can cause cancer, genetic damage, or harm to reproduction. The enforcement will be strengthened through digital tools. All toys placed on the EU market will need to have a digital product passport containing safety and compliance information, accessible to consumers online via a QR code or other data carrier. Customs authorities will be able to check the product passport for toys sold online and imported into the EU, ensuring that all toys on the market meet safety standards. The new regulation represents a significant step towards protecting the health and safety of children in the EU.
