Strovolos Municipality: Progress and Challenges

The Mayor of Strovolos, Stavros Stavrinidis, reports that upon taking office, he found a prolonged stagnation in the municipality, both in the image of the city and in the creation of new infrastructure. However, he emphasizes that the municipality has now entered a path of development, with specific interventions to better serve the citizens. Specifically, the Citizen Service Office has been staffed and emphasis has been placed on cleanliness and green space maintenance. In addition, ward councils have been established so that citizens have direct access to the municipality and can submit their proposals and problems. The mayor emphasizes that the creation of the ward councils was an election commitment. Infrastructure upgrade projects have been promoted, such as the upgrade of the 'Glafkos Clerides' Municipal Sports Center, with new padel courts, basketball courts and a professional-grade track, funded by the Interreg Greece – Cyprus program. However, it is acknowledged that there are still problems being addressed. The municipality faces financial challenges due to the transfer of the building permit issuing authority to the EAC of Nicosia, resulting in a reduction in revenue. In addition, they are seeking financial support for the municipalities for the maintenance of the road network and the inflationary adjustment of state grants.
