The Cyprus He Envisioned

The passing of Giorgos Vasiliou marks a reckoning with his political journey and the principles that defined him. As President of Cyprus, he chose to place the Cyprus issue at the center of his political agenda, internationalizing it and treating it as a historical debt. His election in 1988, with the support of AKEL, was a political turning point, while his defeat in 1993 is not seen as a personal failure, but as a collective one for Cyprus, due to the preference for deadlock over a solution. His governance was characterized by significant reforms and institutions that endure over time, such as the founding of the University of Cyprus and the reorganization of the public administration. He also played a crucial role in the country's European course. Vasiliou was not only a politician, but also a man rooted in the world of labor and a strong culture of solidarity. He considered politics a duty, not a privilege, and his actions were linked to the historical path of AKEL and the social struggles of the country. Following his death, the question that remains is whether Cyprus will choose a path of democracy, meritocracy, peace and reunification, or remain in comfortable deadlocks. Vasiliou's path shows the direction, and the responsibility for the choice lies with all Cypriots.
