The Invention Saving Football Players' Brains: Proteckthor Creators Reveal in SHOOTANDGOAL

“It all started in 2015, on a rainy afternoon, during a conversation with a friend who played semi-professional football. He told me that heading the ball caused him pain. He believed it was his own clumsiness or lack of technique.” That afternoon and what his friend said sparked the creation of a product that came to life this year with a clear goal: to protect football players' brains from head impacts, whether from the ball or otherwise. “From that moment on, I started researching the scientific studies around the topic and discovered that the California Parents Association had filed a lawsuit against FIFA. Although I initially thought that lawsuits in the US were always about profit, I realized that FIFA didn’t want the case to go to court. They reached a financial settlement to withdraw the lawsuit and simultaneously banned heading for children under 11, limiting it to ages 13 and over. They knew what was happening,” says Carlos Pelagio in an interview. By CHARALAMBOS DIMITRIOU Contact Email: demetriouch@mcmedia.com.cy Pelagio, CEO and founder of Proteckthor, decided to create the company with the sole purpose of protecting football players' brains. He himself experienced the consequences of repeated head impacts while playing football, which served as the main motivation to develop something that could help millions of people worldwide. And so, Proteckthor was born – a specially designed head protection tape aimed at reducing the intensity of impacts transmitted to the brain. The company claims this reduction can reach up to 93%. “I wanted to get to the heart of the problem, and that’s when my research began, which included 1,500 footballers who collapsed and died on the field, with 5% of deaths attributed to traumatic brain injuries. The serious issue isn’t just that they die, but that they suffer long-term consequences throughout their lives. They are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s,” he said in a recent interview with Men’s Health. SHOOTANDGOAL spoke with the company behind the revolutionary product, which is slowly starting to appear on Spanish pitches. Among others, Proteckthor is used by Sevilla player Nemanja Gudelj, as well as several male and female footballers, both in professional leagues and at academy level. Rodrigo Cañete, Proteckthor’s marketing director, spoke to our website, emphasizing the difficulties they face in Spain convincing the Federation, and the players, that this is a real problem that needs protective measures.
