The Safest Country in the World for 17 Years: Cyprus's Position and the Top Ten List

Iceland has been ranked the safest country in the world for the 17th consecutive year, according to the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI). The country has held the top spot since 2008, showing a 2% improvement over the previous year and increasing the gap from the second-ranked country. Iceland stands out for its high score in safety and protection, absence of conflict, and low militarization. Daily life in Iceland is characterized by a sense of security, with residents reporting that they can walk alone at night without fear, leave their babies in strollers outside cafes and shops, and that the police do not need to carry weapons. Gender equality policies and a strong welfare state play a significant role in the country's safety. Ireland, despite its violent history, also ranks among the most peaceful countries, thanks to a reduction in militarization and an emphasis on diplomacy. The country's military neutrality and social cohesion contribute to its peaceful atmosphere. New Zealand rose two places to third place, due to increased internal security and a reduction in violent incidents. Cyprus is ranked 68th in the 2025 GPI, above countries such as Senegal, Liberia, Malawi, and Jordan. The index evaluates 163 countries based on 23 indicators, including crime, terrorism, and the level of militarization. The stability of the top-ranked countries reflects the long-term impact of peaceful policies.
