Turkey to Build Solar Power Plant in the Occupied Territories

A Turkey-based company plans to build a large solar power plant in the occupied territories of Cyprus, with an investment of $60 million and a capacity of 50 megawatts. The project, named SANHO, will be constructed in Serhatköy and will include 25 megawatts of storage capacity. The Turkish Cypriot side presents the project as a response to chronic energy shortages and what it calls “energy isolation” by the Greek Cypriot side. The so-called “Minister of Economy and Energy” Olgun Amcaoğlu reiterated the plan for a submarine electricity interconnection cable with Turkey, arguing that it could benefit both communities. According to estimates, the solar power plant is expected to be operational by 2028 and will cover up to 60% of the industrial sector's electricity needs. The construction of the project is an alternative to the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection plan, which has been placed under European auspices.
