Ukraine War: Russia Made Largest Territorial Gains in 2024 Since 2022

Russia made the largest territorial gains in Ukraine in 2024 since 2022, capturing over 5,600 square kilometers, or 0.94% of Ukrainian territory. This capture exceeds the territories it seized in the two previous years (4,000 sq km in 2023 and 580 sq km in 2022). Despite intensified diplomatic efforts to end the war, fighting continues, with Moscow escalating its attacks in Donbas, seeking its full annexation. In December, Russia captured only 244 square kilometers, the smallest area in a month since March, but overall progress for the year is significant. Specifically, 131 sq km were captured in Zaporizhzhia, while Russia controls 19.4% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea and parts of Donbas that were already under its control before the invasion. Conversely, Ukraine recaptured 125 sq km in the Kharkiv region and 55 sq km in Dnipropetrovsk, the largest recaptures since June 2023. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the agreement to end the war is 90% ready, but the remaining 10% is critical for the future of peace and occupied territories.
