UN Moves to Prevent Tensions as Military Buildup Raises Risks in Cyprus

The UN Special Representative to Cyprus, Hasim Dián, is meeting with President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman to prevent escalation of tensions on the island. These meetings are taking place amid increased military activity in Cyprus and the wider region due to the ongoing conflict. The UN is closely monitoring developments and seeking to maintain open communication channels to avoid “miscalculations.” The increased military presence includes aircraft from Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, as well as naval forces from various European countries and the United Kingdom. While the Republic of Cyprus coordinates European military forces, NATO countries are also coordinating through common mechanisms to address potential threats. A significant part of the UN's efforts focuses on preventing incidents in the buffer zone, a sensitive area. UNFICYP has been instructed to intensify efforts and take preventative measures to ensure safety in the area. The priorities of UNFICYP for the coming months include strengthening operational efficiency, ensuring a stable patrol presence in the buffer zone, restoring support for bicommunal activities, and maintaining its role as a stabilizing factor on the island. Mr. Dián emphasized the importance of a static presence in sensitive areas of the buffer zone and the need to keep the area free of incidents.
