UN Secretary-General's Special Representative to Brief Contributing Countries on UNFICYP

The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus, Kazim Ndiian, will brief representatives of countries contributing to UNFICYP today on the situation on the island. He will update the Security Council in closed consultations on January 15th, and the Council will vote on the renewal of UNFICYP's mandate on January 29th. The Security Council is expected to consider ways to encourage both sides to build on recent contacts and avoid actions that undermine the political climate. The possibility of inviting the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, to brief Council members on the prospects for a meeting in an expanded format may be examined. In addition, the potential impact of fiscal adjustments on UNFICYP and the Good Offices will be discussed.
