“Visibility at One Meter” - Divers Describe the Operation to Recover the 34-Year-Old

The operation to recover the 34-year-old diver who had been missing in the Voulagmeni Limanakia has been completed, in one of the most dangerous diving areas in Greece, known as the “Devil’s Well”. The diver had been swept away by strong sea currents into a narrow tunnel during a dive with a friend. The operation was particularly difficult due to the limited visibility (one meter) and strong currents. The divers involved in the operation described the extreme conditions in the “Devil’s Well”, where returning without special preparation is almost impossible. The area acts like a “whirlpool,” with very strong currents making ascent difficult. The recovery took about one hour and twenty minutes, including decompression. The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Police and cave divers, who placed rings and ropes to facilitate the recovery. The divers emphasized that the plan was executed flawlessly. The article recalls the dangers lurking in such areas, citing previous accidents that occurred during lambatziades (traditional Easter bonfires), including deaths and amputations.
