“Will the Banana Cultivation be Doomed?” – Producers in Paphos are Worried

Farmers and banana producers in Paphos expressed their concerns about the adequacy of water for irrigation at a meeting held in Pega. They emphasized that without immediate and adequate solutions, the sustainability of their crops is at risk. They are calling for a significant increase in water production through desalination and the acceleration of the upgrade of the desalination plant in Kouklia, to increase production from 15,000 to 30,000 tons per day. Additionally, they are requesting that the water stored in Mavrokolypos be allocated for the irrigation of permanent crops in the area. The president of the Paphos Banana Producers Committee, Moses Pegiotis, expressed fears for the future of banana cultivation in the region, emphasizing the need for immediate action from the government. The meeting was attended by the Mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambrou, representatives of agricultural organizations, and MPs from Paphos, who pledged to promote the producers' demands to the Ministry of Agriculture and the Water Department.
