Yeni Çağ Attacks Christodoulides and Rejects Federation

The Turkish nationalist newspaper Yeni Çağ launches a scathing attack on the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, accusing him of “duplicitous” tactics and using the term “occupation” to mislead the international community and cover up domestic problems. The newspaper questions the legitimacy of the Republic of Cyprus within the EU, describing its accession as a “historical injustice” against Turkish Cypriots. Furthermore, Yeni Çağ denounces the strengthening of Cyprus's armaments, military agreements with the USA, France, and Israel, as well as the creation of military bases, arguing that these actions contradict the rhetoric of peace and reunification and turn the island into a military bridgehead. The article rejects the federal solution as a “historical trap” for Turkish Cypriots and argues that international conferences serve to consolidate the status quo in favor of the Greek Cypriot side. The newspaper reiterates the position that there are “two peoples, two democracies, and two states” in Cyprus. Ultimately, the article argues that any solution not based on sovereign equality cannot be sustainable, clearly reaffirming the line of a two-state solution.
